Rope maker - In 1841 the family were living in the upper part of the hamlet of Mile End Old Town, in the parish of St. Dunstan's, Stepney, and in all subsequent censuses up to and including 1881 the family were in the Stepney / Mile End Old Town area, so John probably working in the Stepney / Limehouse area.
Every census including the 1891 one when John was in the workhouse shows him as a rope maker; presumably it was just old age that forced him to give up this work.

The register of deaths in Bromley Workhouse shows that John was "taken by friends" for burial. (In this context 'friends' includes family, and with a large family there can be little doubt it would be one of them who made the funeral / burial arrangements)
Buried - Workhouse register (image on Ancestry, viewed 18 Sep 2012) shows he was "Taken by Friends" to be buried - in this context friends include family.
