Oliver PALMER
Set As Default Person -
Name Oliver PALMER Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1780 - Date from age recorded when he died.
His place of settlement was clearly Lamerton, as that is where his widow and two daughters were removed to following his death.
However, that does not necessarily mean he was born there
Gender Male Died 17 May 1812 The Village, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England
Cause: Manslaughter - Killed with a potato axe by his brother-in-law, John Justham - Date from gravestone. Place from coroner's report description - described there as "Buckland Monachorum Church town".
Buried 18 May 1812 St. Andrew’s Church, Buckland Monachorum, Devon, England
- Gravestone shows that he was "unfortunately slain" at the age of 31.
Who erected this? Given that his wife was removed to her legal place of settlement soon after his death it seems unlikely she could afford it; maybe it was his parents. What does "slain" mean? It sounds to me like it means a deliberate killing, but this may not be right. Admittedly longer before Oliver's death than we are now after it, I have read of a burial recorded as "a poore boy slain wth a fall from a cart" (Chislet, Kent on 5 Aug 1586) so it may be that it could refer to an accident.
The burial register records "May 18 Oliver Palmer 31 Wilfully murderd with a potatoe ax by his Brother in Law Jno. Jetsome a Lad 17 years of age" (seen PR image on microfiche in Tavistock Library, 13 May 2013)
