Name Nicholas FOGWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1779 Baptised 8 Aug 1779 St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England - From IGI and DP CD; agree
Nicholas Vogwill, son of William and Cathren
Gender Male Residence From 1789 to 1795 Stoke Gabriel, Devon, England [1] - In examination concerning his legal place of settlement in 1799 it is said he claimed "... when he was about Ten Years of Age he went to live with Philip Angle in the parish of Stokegabriel in the said County for his Meat Drink & Clothes and remained with him untill he was about Sixteen Years ..."
The list of rates paid in Widecombe include a Philip Angle with property in Hexworthy; I suspect it was this same Philip that Nicholas went to live with, and that it was through the Hexworthy connection.
It sounds rather like he went as a pauper apprentice, but not only is there no evidence of an indenture, although indentures survive for this period in the 'Parish Chest' at Widecombe, but that would have usually lasted until he reached the age of 21, although they could end sooner by agreement, if the master died or sometimes because the apprentice ran away!
So it seems that this may have been a private arrangment, but I expect Nicholas' life would probably have been similar to that of a pauper apprentice, working for this keep at menial tasks. It would be interesting to know the occupation of Philip Angle.
Occupation From 1795 to 1796 Harberton, Devon, England [1] Worked for Nicholas Weymouth - "then he went into the parish of Harberton in the said County and made a Bargain with Nicholas Weymouth for a year at Six pounds ten Shillings, and served that Year and received his full Wages for the same, ..."
Occupation From 1796 to 1799 Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England [1] Day labourer - "... then he returned into the parish of Widdecombe in the Moor, aforesaid and Worked for Sir. Francis Buller Bart. as a Day Labourer for the space of three years, then he Married ..."
Since he married in 1798 if the 3 years were prior to his marriage they must have been about 1795 - 1798. and the preceeding years slightly out.
Sir Francis Buller lived at Prince Hall and was responsible for a lot of newtakes created around this time.
Poor Law 15 Oct 1799 Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England [1] Poor Law Examination - Nicholas was examined in 1799, presumably he needed assistance under the poor laws, or seemed likely to, and this was to check his place of legal settlement, and hence where he and his family were eligible to receive it.
