Bartholomew MATTACOTT
Set As Default Person -
Name Bartholomew MATTACOTT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1690 - Date estimated based on date of baptism of first known child
n.b. I do not know that Bartholomew was the son of William and Joan - this is just a guess. It is based on
1. Wm and Joan both being described as of Sampford Spiney when they married (in Whitchurch) and their burials being in Sampford Spiney - and Sampford Spiney being where Bartholomew farmed and was buried.
2. Bartholomew called his first son William - if they didn't give their 1st son their own name, men most often gave him their father's name.
3. William (the suggested father of this Bartholomew) had a father named Bartholomew so there is a good chance he would have given the name to a son.
If Bartholomew was not the son of William I think he was probably the son of one of William's brothers, probably in that case taking over the farm from a childless uncle.
Gender Male Occupation 1751 Sandford, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
Husbandman - The Sherborne Mercury of 1751 shows that Bartholomew was the tenant of "Sandford tenement", paying a yearly rent of £27. A rent of this size would have been for land as well as a house, from which I deduce that Bartholomew was a husbandman (tenant farmer).
"Also, the remainder of a Term of Years, determinable on 2 Lives, of and in a Tenement called Sandford, now lett to Bartholomew Maddacott, at the Yearly Rent of £27."
