Alice SPURRELL
Set As Default Person -
Name Alice SPURRELL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 1782 St. Leonard’s Church, Sheepstor, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 22 Aug 2012):
Under heading "Baptisms 1782" - almost unreadable - can read "Daughter of Samuel & Patty Spuril".
At first I thought name looked something like M-l---ry. Could be a b rather than l. If it weren't for this letter I'd think Margery, and there was a marriage of a Margery Spurrel in Sampford Spiney in 1809 so this does seem a possibility. Date completely impossible to read. Need to see BTs.
Others see this as Alice and census evidence shows Samuel and Patty did have a daughter Alice, with the age on the census showing her birth c.1782 or 3. I couldn't see this at first, but can now - what I thought first part of a large capital may simply be a mark on the page, similarly a mark hides whether there is a letter precedidng the 'y'. And it may not be a y but a thorn of "the" i.e. "Alice the daughter". The writer was inconsistant in including the word 'the' before son or daughter, and nowhere else on the page abbreviates by using a thorn, though.
Gender Female Occupation 1841 Burrator, Sheepstor, Devon, England
Farmer's wife - Shown as "Formerly farmer's wife" in the 1816 census.
Died 1865 - Not found in GRO original index (on FreeBMD) or on online index - have checked for her surname as Andrew or Andrews, for Alic* (in case recorded as Alicia or similar), for date between 1862 and 1869 (in case year wrong in burial register)
Buried 8 Feb 1865 St. Mary’s Church, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 14 Apr 2013):
"1865, Alice Andrews, abode Tavistock, Feby. 8, aged 79, ceremony performed by A. Pope, Curate"
- abode shown as Tavistock at time of death. Age given as 79 which suggests born c. 1786 but I've not found another Alice in the census returns whose death this could be, nor any Alice Andrew(s) death in the dths index who could be this Alice.
(I did think it most likely she would have been buried in Sheepstor with her husband; burials for Sheepstor for this period are not on FMP. Sampford Spiney is where her parents and a number of siblings were buried)
Siblings4 brothers and 5 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch
William SPURRELL, b. Est 1690, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandfather)
Anne, d. Yes, date unknown (2 x Great Grandmother)
Notes - The 1851 census shows a widow Alice Andrews as sister of John Spurrell, hence me showing she had a husband with that surname.

(Age ~ 90 years) Banns of marriage 22 Mar 1772 to 5 Apr 1772 Walkhampton Church, Walkhampton, Devon, England
- Samuel Spurrill otp and Patty Reed of the parish of Sheepstor, no additional info. (from Banns / marriages register, image on FMP, viewed 18 Aug 2012)
Banns of marriage 8 Mar 1772, 29 Mar 1772, 19 Apr 1772 St. Leonard’s Church, Sheepstor, Devon, England
- PR with combined banns / marriage entry - shows banns unusually (in my experience) being read at 3 weekly intervals - because in this tiny place, which was not then a parish in its own right, there was only a service every 3 weeks.
No info. given as to marital status etc.

Married 22 Apr 1772 St. Leonard’s Church, Sheepstor, Devon, England
- The marriage part of the combined banns / marriage entry shows that Samuel and Patty both made their marks, while Alice Reed and Peter Reed Junr. (both appear to be siblings of Patty's) signed. It would seem strange if they could write and Patty couldn't - but Samuel seems to have signed plenty of documents in Sheepstor, so I guess both could write but didn't on this occasion.

Showing where the graves of Samuel and Patty Spurrell and several of their descendants are positioned, in relation both to each other and to the Church.
Some other descendants of theirs, including two, daughters, one being my ancestor Mary, are also buried in this churchyard, but the graves appear to be unmarked.
