Bartholomew MATTACOTT
Set As Default Person -
Name Bartholomew MATTACOTT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 27 Dec 1755 St. Mary’s Church, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 28 Jan 2013):
"1755 Bartholomew the son of William Matticott & Joan his Wife was Baptised the 27th of December"
Gender Male Residence 1841 Lovaton, Meavy, Devon, England
- At the time of his death
Occupation Farmer - Bartholomew seems to have been the first with the name to farm in Meavy, so I guess it was him whose land the following applied to, though it could have been an older Bartholomew living and / or buried in another parish:
from the indictable offences which were heard at the County Quarter Sessions (DRO ref - Devon QS10/1):
William Mattacott of Sampford Spiney, labourer (I suspect William was Bartholomew's 15 year old brother, though he could have been his father, aged, I guess, about 45 at this time) was brought before the Court in 1776:
No455/114 - 8th November 15 George 3 - For a forcible entry into a messuage or tenement and lands with the appurtenances called Treby Parks in the parish of Meavy and expelling Samuel Light therefrom who was tenant to Bartholomew Mattacott. Traversed Michaelmas 1775. Bill found Easter 1775. Tryed Epiphany 1776 - fined 6d.
I would have felt sorry for Samuel - if it weren't for the seemingly light punishment. One has to wonder whether the Mattacotts had a good reason to wish to be rid of Samuel - maybe he was neglecting the property,
Died 2 Feb 1841 Lovaton, Meavy, Devon, England
- Date from gravestone, place assumed from abode given in burial register
Buried 5 Feb 1841 St. Peter’s Church, Meavy, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 18 Aug 2012), Meavy PR:
"1841 Bartholomew Mattacott, abode Loveton, buried Feby 5th, aged 86, ceremony performed by John Abbott, Rector".
The Dartmoor Press CD shows information from a gravestone: Bartholomew died 2.2.1841, and had a son Bartholomew. It agrees he was aged 86.
