Joan STACEY
Set As Default Person -
Name Joan STACEY Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born - (I first estimated 1730 based on date of marriage)
Baptised 7 Dec 1716 St. Andrew’s Church, Beerferris, Devon, England
- From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 3 Sep 2014):
"Joan daughter of Ambrose Stacy & Joan his wife"
** possibly this Joan but see my research notes for more consideration of this **
Gender Female Died Abt May 1810 Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
- (assumed from burial)
Buried 8 May 1810 St. Mary’s Church, Sampford Spiney, Devon, England
- From image on FMP, viewed 18 Aug 2012:
"1810 Joan Matticott was Buried the 8th May"
There was also another Joan bur in Sampford Spiney in 1782
"1782 Joan Matticott was buried the 16th June".
I suspect the 1810 burial was this Joan because the only Wm to fit was buried June 1810, and as sometimes happens I guess he went downhill following his wife's death, plus their daughter Margaret lived to be at least 90, with their sons living to the ages of 86, 88 and 80; longevity often runs in families, especially from mothers.

Joan, bur. 14 Dec 1716, St. Andrew’s Church, Beerferris, Devon, England
(Mother)
Notes - Clearly Joan's surname is hard to read in the marriage PR entry - DFHS have as the unlikely Slany (unlikely because there seem to be no other Slanys in the area), DP has "Harvy[?]".
There was a baptism in Sampford Spiney in 1736 (12 Feb) of a Joan Harries, dau of John & Elizabeth of Minstor, Cornwall. Maybe this is her?
(Minstor: presumably the Minster near Tintagel, now part of a joint parish with Forrabury - see the OPC website for more information, and the location is shown on a map here. Church website
Now that Tavistock PR images are (supposedly online) it seems the banns were read there; the FMP index shows her surname as Stacey. This could well be right, but there are sufficient poor transcriptions on FMP that I would like to check it for myself - but yet again FMP have mucked things up, and the image of the facing page with the names is missing! - (Research):Amongst those PRs currently on FMP (as at 3 Sep 2014) there is no probable baptism for Joan. Since the banns were read in Tavistock and the marriage was at Sampford Spiney she must have been 'of' (i.e. living in) one of these at that time - but of course need not have been born and baptised there.
The name of her third son is of interest: Ambrose. This is not a Christian name previously found amongst the Mattacotts.
It is clear that there were at one time many Stacys in Bere Ferrers, including several Ambroses.
There was a Joan, daughter of Ambrose, baptised there in 1716. That baptism could be this Joan, but is a bit early: it would mean she was 48 when her last child was born. A bit old, but it could explain why there were no more children after this.
Whether or not this Joan was baptised in 1716, I think the use of the name Ambrose does point to a link to the Bere Ferrers family.
Several members of this family left wills in the C17th, mostly only surviving as list items, but a Lawrence left one proved in the PCC in 1618 and which does as a result survive. Reading it he does not appear to be as well off as most of those whose wills were proved by the PCC.
I doubt he was a direct ancestor.
IF this Joan was the daughter of Ambrose and Joan AND I am right about the parents of Ambrose born c. 1650, then direct ancestor Symon could be the brother of Lawrence.
However, there seems to have been 3 or 4 Stacey families having children baptised in Bere Ferrers in the 1590s.
