Name Matilda VOGWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 17 Feb 1822 [1] Baptised 17 Mar 1822 St. Andrew’s Church, Whitchurch, Devon, England - From PR (seen image)
'Matilda Daughter of Henry and Ann Vogwill', abode: Parish of Whitchurch, father's occupation: thatcher
Gender Female Occupation 1841 East Street, Newton Abbot, Devon, England Dress maker - Living with Maria Phillipps (laundress, rounded down age shown as 30) and I guess her son, 9 year old John Phillipps at the time of the census.
Died Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, USA [2] - "Matilda died in Chicago long before William did"
Siblings 2 brothers and 2 sisters Half-siblings 1 half sister (family of "Unknown" and Jane BAILEY) Patriarch & Matriarch William VOGWELL, b. Est 1720, d. Nov 1789, Whitchurch, Devon, England (Age ~ 69 years) (Great Grandfather)
Elizabeth JORDAN, b. Est 1732, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandmother)Person ID I1036 All Last Modified 27 Nov 2017
Father Henry VOGWELL, b. Abt 1794, Whitchurch, Devon, England , d. 15 Nov 1871, Stoke Damerel, Devon, England (Age ~ 77 years)
Other Partners: Ann ROUNSEVELL m. 25 Jul 1856Mother Jane BAILEY, b. Abt 1787, Kingsteignton, Devon, England , d. Mar Q 1852, Stoke Damerel Reg Dist, Devon, England (Age ~ 65 years) Married 27 Sep 1816 St. Mary’s Church, Bathwick, Somerset, England - I was guessing the marriage would have taken place about 1816, i.e. not too long before the first child was born (IF I know of all the children)
And then I found this marriage - a good match on date, and given the rarity of surname Vogwill seems too much to be co-incidence. But in Somerset -why did they marry in Bathwick? Census shows Jane to have been born Kingsteignton so I don't think it indicates the bride being a different Jane Bailey.
Now (29 July 2017) the Somerset baptism index is on FMP, there is not a single (F/V)ogw(e/i)ll baptism in it, in any part of Somerset at any date; clearly Henry was from elsewhere.
