    • Living with her widowed grandmother, Jane Wright, rather than her parents and siblings
Shown separately but in the same house was Betsy Ware, like her grandmother a grocer. Close in age, and marrying just a few months apart, both Jane and Betsy were widows of copper miners and may have known each other all their lives. Certainly at the time of the 1861 census they were neighbours and their young families must have meant a friendship was likely.
According to The Book of Peter Tavy and Cudlipptown Jane's daughter Polly later ran the village shop; possibly she took over from her mother.
    Occupation 1901
    Asst Wl School Mistress
    • Looks like "Asst Wl School Mistress" - I don't know what Wl (if it is Wl) is short for.

      Where was Thomas?
Possibly gone abroad to work in mines, or seek other employment. If he was seeking a "better life" for his family, he seems to have returned to Peter Tavy as he is buried with Hannah in the village.

    • Hannah married "Thomas Ash from Tavistock" according to "The Book of Peter Tavy with Cudlipptown" p51. The fact he was born in Mary Tavy does not contradict this - he was living with his parents and siblings in Tavistock by the time he was 4 (1881 census).

Actual date and place from GOONS Marriage Index

The Peter Tavy book contains a photo of the programme of a concert in aid of the Football Club, in 1900 (p.90). Many took part, mostly singing alone, but one duet was sung by Mr T Ash and Miss Vogwill - I guess probably this couple - when they were courting? (The sang "Music Sweet Shall Flow Tonight")
They also sang individually - Thomas Ash singing "The Charge of the 21st Lancers" and Miss Vogwill "Willie, we have missed you". The book notes that Thomas Ash was particularly appreicated for his fine voice.
