  • Name John ROPER
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Between 1773 and 1784
    • It seems reasonable to suppose John was born between the time of his mother's first marriage and her second, though not absolutely certain.
I suspect that John was the child of his parents baptised in 1773, whose name is illegible in the PR.

    • There were 2 John Ropers born at a similar time in Stokenham; this baptism is for a Roper, Christian name illegible, I suspect it was this John.

    Notes
    • (Research):The will of his aunt Susanna Efford nee Issell makes it clear that Solomon and Sarah had a son called John.
This may be the son of theirs who was baptised in 1773, but whose name is said to be illegible in the PRs (he did have a separate entry in this tree but I have now merged the two)

There were, though, quite a few John Ropers.
In particular, there were 2 born at a similar time in Stokenham and both married Marys. This one was probably baptised in 1773; the other was baptised in 1776.

One married a Mary born in Slapton. He became a labourer and then farmer, spending some of his life in Blackawton Parish, and later Alleleigh, before ending his life in Dartmouth (but being buried in Blackawton)

The other married a Mary born in Loddiswell in 1802. He was a labourer in West Alvington Parish, seeming to have spent most of his life in Sorley in that parish.

In 1841 the Sorley one was shown as aged 60 (i.e. born 1776-81), the Blackawton one was shown as aged 65 (i.e. born 1771-76).

This makes the Blackawton one more likely to be this one.
However, the 1851 census shows the Sorley one as aged 79, the Blackawton one as aged 75, which suggests the Sorley John Roper is this one!
In addition, the names given to their children suggest that the Blackawton one was likely tobe the son of James and Grace.

I have therefore attached the Sorley John Roper as the son of Solomon and Sarah, but include the other John Roper separately. [1]
