Philip Inman's home in Kirkgate
My 2 x great grandfather seems to have been living in Kirkgate by 1851 and until his death in 1894. These cottages include the one where his youngest son Philip was born in 1892, and this was quite likely where he had lived for all of those years, with both his wives and families.
Described by Philip Inman junior (b.1892) in his autobiography "No Going Back" (p.11):
The home I was born into was a cottage, one of a row of four, long since demolished. They were whitewashed and had thatched roofs. Indoors there were four small rooms, two up, two down, with low ceilings and tiny windows. The only water came from a public tap thirty yards away and there was, of course, no bathroom and no inside sanitation. Almost my earliest memory is of being carried down the garden to the ramshackle earth closet. Often the wind buffeted our faces and whined through the cracks in the wooden wall.
The 1901 census confirms that these cottages had 4 rooms (at least, 3 in a row did, with the 4th having just 3 rooms).
In 1901 Philip's widow and family still occupied one of the cottages in Kirkgate, with her step-daughter Hannah and her family in the adjacent one. Both were shown as having 4 rooms. Frederick had by now moved to another part of Kirkgate - number of rooms not shown, implying it had at least 5 and was probably the 6-roomed house in Kirkgate where he was living in 1911.
Philip's widow moved to a new house in Scriven (between about 1901-1904), while his daughter was still living in a small 4 roomed house, possibly still one of the thatched cottages, in Kirkgate in 1911.
