Name Richard PENGELLY Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1841 Peter Tavy, Devon, England - Age at marriage given as 33, implying born about 1843, though age at burial given as 90, implying born abt 1841, which agrees with 1871 census showing his age as 30.
Gender Male Residence 1871 Middleworth Farm, Walkhampton, Devon, England - In 1871 Richard was living with his parents, 6 siblings and a niece at Middleworth Farm.
Now a widow, Richard was lodging with his older brother John Pengelly, aged 55 (and single), the farmer in 1891; also present was a 5 year old lodger - Richard's son, William H Pengelly. William was born in Ontario, Canada - which probably explains why I haven't found Richard and Amelia in the 1881 census for England and Wales.
John probably died in 1900 (the death of a John aged 64 was registered in the Tavistock District in the first quarter), and by the time of the 1901 census Arthur Williams and his family were at Middleworth. It looks like the death of John may have forced Richard to move on.
Although Arthur Williams was a relation of Richard's wife (Arthur's mother was also a Northmore) the relationship was so distant - 5th cousin twice removed, that it is almost certainly just chance that Arthur took the farm on.
Occupation 1876 Walkhampton, Devon, England Farmer - At the time of his marriage
Residence From 1881 to 1885 Canada - Richard and Amelia appear to have emigrated between the birth of their first child, Amelia and the time of the 1881 census. They must have returned to England between about 1885 when their son was born and 1890 when Amelia (senior) died.
Residence 1891 Middleworth Farm, Walkhampton, Devon, England - Now a widow, Richard was back at Middleworth Farm, lodging with his older brother John Pengelly, aged 55 (and single), the farmer in 1891; also present was a 5 year old lodger - Richard's son, William H Pengelly.
Residence 1901 Little Horrabridge, Horrabridge, Walkhampton, Devon, England - Richard Pengelly was living with a young couple Frederick and Hannah Doney, shown as uncle; also present and shown as cousins were Bertha and William Pengelly - presumably Richard's children.
Both Richard and his nephew Frederick were described in the census as general labourers, while his son was a 'Farm Servant (Domestic)'
Residence From 1911 to 1931 Coombeshead Farm, Walkhampton, Devon, England - Home at the time of his death. At the time of the 1891 census one Henry Pengelly, aged 45 so a similar age to Richard (then recorded as 49) was farming at Coombeshead.
By 1901 Henry had given up farming at Coombeshead and was living in Sydenham Damerel with his family and working as a labourer. At the time of the census Coombeshead Farm was not in occupation.
Sometime between 1901 and 1911 Richard seems to have taken over as farmer; given it was unoccupied at the time of the census I suspect he took over soon after. It looks like he made a success of farming there, given it was where he was living at the time of his death in 1931.
Buried 12 Dec 1931 St. Leonard’s Church, Sheepstor, Devon, England - From Dartmoor Press transcribed data, shows aged 90, of Coombshead in Walkhampton
