Name William GRIGSBY Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Dec 1707 Marden, Kent, England - (assumed from baptism)
Baptised 21 Dec 1707 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Marden, Kent, England - KFHS transcript CD25
described as son of "Matthew and Margaret"
Gender Male Poor Law 1 Apr 1734 Wormshill, Kent, England Settlement Certificate - William must have done something to gain a legal settlement in Wormshill, since Wormshill supplied Headcorn with a settlement certificate accepting that William Grigsby and his wife Frances had a legal right of settlement in the Parish. The overseers of the poor in Headcorn must have been afraid that William and his family might become in need of support from the poor rates.
Most likely William had gained settlement in Wormshill through serving an apprenticeship in the Parish, or it could be that he had been employed in a job for a whole year or longer.
William and Frances had children baptised in Headcorn up to 1746, so it seems the family did not need support at least until then. By now Frances was aged nearly 40 so the lack of any more may well have been the result of age and does not point to them leaving Headcorn at this time.
However, the family (i.e. William's children and wife) later turn up near to Wormshill. Did they move to Worshill due to poverty and then spread out from their?
I have not found William's burial, in Headcorn, Wormshill or elsewhere. Did he die before the family moved or after?
Died Bef 1775 - Entry in PR for burial I believe most likely his wife (qv) has no "wife of ..." comment, so she was probably a widow, hence he probably died before 1775.
I think he was probably the William Grigsby buried in Hucking 29 Aug 1774. Could be his son or grandson - probably not his son, as although he had children baptised in Hucking 1756-68, when his wife was buried in 1781 she was described as 'wife of William'.

Emlen ROFE, b. Est 1612, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandmother)Notes - (Research):William Grigsby does not appear to have been born in Headcorn. A name as common as William is not a good name to look for!
In Marden alone, a place with a particularly large no. of Grigsbys in the late 1600s / early 1700s, there were several Williams that could have been the one who married in 1733:
- one would have been aged between 17 (younger than the age at which most young men got married - more likely to have been the William who married Mary Quaif in Marden in 1738/39)
- one aged 46; older than the most likely age range, though of course plenty of men married later after being widowed. This would seem to be the William who married in 1714, and who wasn't a widower in 1733/34.
- this one who would have been about 26 in 1733. Not only does his age make him the most likely, but his father was named Matthew - a relatively uncommon name but one that he appears to have given to his second son, after he had named the first after himself.
For the moment, therefore, I have assumed for this tree that Matthew and his wife (Margaret or Mary - tbc - IGI entries vary) are this William's parents.
