( I suspect there may have been another child, born between William and Edward; the PR entries are missing, on FMP at least but likely because a few pages have been lost, between 1806 and 1812. Checking the BTs may find another).
There were at least 4 John's who could easily have been the one who married Mary in Orpington in 1799: either of those baptised in 1772, in Eynsford or Halstead, or either of those baptised in Knockholt, in 1777 or 1778.
Looking at baptisms of children of 'John and Mary' in the area between 1790 and 1830, there were clearly 2 such couples having children, one from 1801-1822, 2 baptised in Shoreham then the rest in Halstead, the other couple from 1808-1825, all baptised in Knockholt.
A John and Mary are together in Halstead in 1841, and John, now a widower there in 1851. His age given in 1851 and at death registration, and the place of birth in the 1851 census, indicate that the one who lived in Halstead was the one born there, i.e. it seems fairly safe to assume the one who married Mary Temple was this John, and the one who had children from 1801 was certainly this John.
Whilst it could be argued the children born in Shoreham could be children of the John and Mary who subequently had children in Knockholt, rather than the couple who subequently had children in Halstead, there is evidence to show this was not the case. With John in Halstead in 1851 was a grandson, Joseph Mantle, aged 11. There is a marriage of Mary Whitehead to Edward Mantle in 1825 in Halstead, the census entries for them and their family show Mary b c. 1805 in Shoreham, and Halstead PRs show they had a son Joseph baptised there in 1840. That Mary was a daughter of this John is clear.
