    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born
    • Was the Nicholas who married in Kingsteignton in 1681 the son of Thomas and Martha, baptised in Whitchurch?
      This seems likely for three reasons:
      - there is no sign of that Nicholas remaining in or near Whitchurch,
      - he named a son Martha, which would be his mother's name if I have the right Nicholas;
      - I can find no other Nicholas either in the Tavistock area (the heartland of the Cudlips) or in the Kingsteignton area who could be the one who married in Kingsteignton.
      There was a Nicholas baptised in Tavistock in 1656, but I believe he married in the town in 1680 as he named a daughter with the unusual name Prothesye, the name of a sister and a grandmother.

      However, one thing that needs to be borne in mind is that the Nicholas who married in Kingsteignton is likely to have been born during the Civil Wars or interregnum period which caused the loss of and / or disruption to the keeping of PRs.
      One thing that concerns me about identifying the Nicholas who married in Kingsteignton with the one born in Whitchurch is his choice of a name for his son. Daniel was not the commonest of names but there were several amongst the Cudlips, but not close to Nicholas. However, I don't think it a large enough obstacle to put serious doubt on the link of Nicholas to Thomas and Martha.

    Notes
    • Was it the Nicholas baptised in Whitchurch in 1650 who married in Kingsteignton in 1681? His age would make him a likely candidate, but the distance between the two marriages does not.
      In addition, why did he call his son Daniel? There was a Daniel baptised in Tavistock in 1627; he was probably the Daniel who married there in 1647. (There was also a Daniel baptised in 1617, but he died in 1622 so can be discounted as a possible ancestor of Daniel of Kingsteignton). Using the index on FMP (i.e. not a thorough search) shows children baptised in 1654, 1656 and 1666. These dates mean it is unlikely these were the only children of the marriage, and quite likely there was a Nicholas. Although I have no evidence there was such a son, I think it possible that the Nicholas who married in Kingsteignton was the son of Daniel of Tavistock; I would think it more likely than that he was the son of Thomas of Whitchurch were it not for Marthas.
      Nicholas in Kingsteignton named his only known daughter Martha, not his wife's name, not the name of the wife of Daniel of Tavistock (which was Agnes), but it was the name of the mother of Nicholas, son of Thomas of Whitchurch. A Martha Cudlip married in Kingsteignton in 1715, and had a child baptised in 1717; this Martha was almost certainly Nicholas' daughter. So who was the Martha buried in Kingsteignton in 1688/9? Could Martha, mother of Nicholas from Whitchurch have moved to Kingsteignton to live with him in old age? I cannot find a burial or remarriage for her in or near Whitchurch. Living with a daughter might have generally been more likely (except where a widow stayed in the family home inherited by a son) but in this case Martha only had sons.
