GRO ref: Brealey, William Woodhouse q3 1837 Leek RD 17 29; GRO online index does not show a mother's maiden name, probably meaning he was illegitimate (some legitimate births pre-1850 do lack a mother's maiden name in the index, but another on the same page has one so in this case it seems unlikely he was legitimate).
Gender Male Occupation 1871 Engineer and Iron Founders Manager Occupation From 1881 to 1891 Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England Mechanical Draughtsman - (Place assumed from where the family were living).
Being a draughtsman sounds a step down from being a manager, but possibly this skill was more highly valued, especially if 'manager' was more of a foreman job. The fact that he could employ a housekeeper with 4 children at school to keep and no others in the house bringing in an income means he can't have been poorly off.
Residence From 1901 to 1915 35, Blurton Road, Fenton, Staffordshire, England - At the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses, and given as his address in his probate calendar entry.
In 1881 with all his children living at home being at school William was employing a housekeeper, but in 1891 his eldest daughter, Annie, a spinster was keeping house for him and her siblings. By 1901 she had married but had not left her father - she, her husband and daughter were all living with him. However, she was not expected to do all the domestic duties; the family again had a live-in servant. She was, though, only aged 14 so Annie would presumably have need to oversee her more than if they had had an older housekeeper. By the time of the 1911 census, with his daughter Annie, her husband and daughter still living with him, a live-in servant had been dispensed with (although of course one who did not live in may have been employed).
