Other Partners: James DUTTON m. 3 Apr 1864Married 14 Jun 1852 St. Mark’s Church, Shelton, Staffordshire, England - When Ann married James Dutton she was a widow with the surname Keeling, but there are no marriages of an Ann Gotham to a Keeling. Of course she could have been married more than once before she married James Dutton, but I can find no marriages of an Ann(e) Gotham/Gothan that could be her.
She probably married for the first time between 1851 and 1861, as not found as a Gotham in the 1861 census - certainly not with her parents.
The following appears to be the first marriage of Ann, although she is recorded as 'Bothen' rather than 'Gotham':
GRO ref: Bothen, Ann to Keeling, George q2 1852 Stoke upon Trent RD 6b 216
Also recorded as Bothen in local BMD index and in PR entry.
Staffs BMD (index for 1852): KEELING, George to BOTHEN, Ann, church: Shelton, St Mark; registers at: Stoke-On-Trent, ref: 27/02/195
Details from PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 4 Mar 2017)(these three records would only represent one error - once the Parish Register record was made, the GRO and local RO copies were made from it)
Reason for thinking this is Ann's marriage, despite the surname discrepancy:
1. Bothen is clearly an error. This is the only 'Bothen' event in Staffordshire on FreeBMD (as at 4 Mar 2017, when indexing is nearly complete for 1837-1983).
There are only 5 Bothen events on FreeBMD anywhere, so this is clearly not a stray event, but a misrecording of a surname. Clearly Bothen is similar to Gotham, although there are more similar surnames such as Botham.
2. The name Gotham was recorded as the mother's maiden name when the births of the children of this couple were registered.
3. The absence of an entry for the marriage of this Ann Gotham, either in the BMD registration index or index of PR entries, although any marriage of hers must have happened after registration started, and at a date when most marriages were in churches and most Staffordshire Church marriages are on FMP, which suggests a mis-transcription or recording (although there are other possibilities such as living as though married when no ceremony had taken place).
4. The match of the data other than surname with this Ann in the PR entry. Her age is right, father's Christian name is right, and most significant is the address and occupation of her father.
In 1851, the year before the marriage, Ann's father had been a ag labourer, living in Liverpool Road, Stoke on Trent, not very similar to the PR entry but by 1861 he was living in Shelton Lock House, recorded then simply as a labourer, but shown in 1871 as a lock keeper. While there were many ag or general labourers, the unusual occupation of lock keeper and the exact match of address of Shelton Lock almost certainly points to this being this John and his daughter Ann, showing that John must have moved in the year between the census and Ann's marriage.
(Clara, shown as the daughter of George and Ann, may have been the daughter of James Keeling and Elizabeth née Gotham)
