  • Name Prudence WALKER
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1801
    • Based on date of birth of her husband and taking account of the date of their marriage and the baptism of their child.
Marriage licence simply shows that she was of the age of 'twenty one years and upwards', Thomas was shown the same, as were the brides and grooms in the previous and next licences in the bundle, clearing meaning simply 'over 21' and that no parental consent was needed.
    Gender Female
    Bond 21 Apr 1823
For the admon. of her father's estate
    • Along with her brother John and a tobacconist, John Jones, Prudence was bound to pay £300 should her brother John not  administer the estate properly.
Residence 10, Wood Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • Given as her residence in book recording navy allotment to be paid
    Died Between 1830 and 1861
    • Prudence's husband was shown as a widower in the 1861 census, but I can find neither of them in earlier censuses. Thomas may well have been at sea; the absence of Prudence from any obvious entry in the indexes to the censuses may be because she died before 1841. With, in addition, no apparent death registration, I would think she probably died between 1830 and 1837. Alternatively, she may have moved to Scotland. If so, then she probably died between 1844 and 1861. An Elizabeth I think was her daughter died in Liverpool in 1844; Elizabeth would probably have moved with her parents to Scotland if they had moved before this date.
Thomas went on several voyages from Greenock and from Glasgow in the 1850s. No death registration found in Scotland but it did not start there until 1855.
One other possibility is that she and Thomas had separated and she was living under a different name. The difficulty for most of divorcing for most of the C19th made this not too rare an event, and especially common amongst mariners' wives, who might form a new liaison during the long absence of a husband.
(Elizabeth was still alive in 1830 when her husband's RN allotment was recorded as to be paid to her)

Given the number of siblings Elizabeth had it is quite possible she is mentioned in one or more wills, which could narrow down when she might have died. I have not at present sought to explore this.
