    • This is a PROB 11 will, presumably proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, but it says proved 'apud Knoll'. The Archbishop at the time was Thomas Bourchier; according to Wikipedia when he died about 8 months after the will was proved it was at Knole House, 'he palatial residence he had transformed'. (I don't know if the Prerogative Court often met there, or if it was due to the frailty of the Archbishop; not only was it only 8 months before his death but he was over 80,a and at a time when travel was slower and more demanding than today).
Inquisition Post Mortem 16 Apr 1486
    Dorset
    • This shows that Walter Paunesfote, knight, died '26 June last', seised of the under-mentioned manor and advowson in fee. Walter Paunesfote, aged 30 and more, is his son and heir.

      Property in Dorset:
Manor and advowson of Little Hynyngton, alias Hyneton [Hinton Pava], worth 5 marks, held of the King in chief, by service of one knight's fee.

This inquistion followed the issuing of letters patent rather than a writ, so was held under a commission dated 28 Jan 1 Hen. VII (1485/6). The inquisition itself was on 16 April, 1 Hen. VII.

(The inquisition can be seen at TNA, ref. ; I have not yet seen this - the information here is from a calendar, available online on the BHO website (no. 20).
Inquisition Post Mortem 18 Apr 1486
    Somerset
    • This shows the findings (death of Walter, information about his heir) were as for the Dorset IPM.

      Property in Somerset:
Manor and advowson of Compton Paunesfote, worth £14 10s., held of John, Lord Dynham, service unknown.
Two messuages, a cottage, and 40 acres of arable in Blakeford, worth 20s., and a toft and 10 acres of arable in Maperton, worth 5s., held of John, Abbot of Glastonbury, by suit of his court of view of frankpledge of Whytleygh at Hock day [the Tuesday 9 days after Easter Day] and Michaelmas [29 Sept] yearly.

This inquistion followed the issuing of letters patent rather than a writ, so was held under a commission, which was dated 28 Jan 1 Hen. VII (1485/6). The inquisition itself was on 18 April, 1 Hen. VII.

(The inquisition can be seen at TNA, ref. ; I have not yet seen this - the information here is from a calendar, available online on the BHO website (no. 22).

    • Not only do his bequests for a chantry chapel suggest that that is where he would have been buried, but his granddaughter Ann in her will expresses a wish to be buried where her grandfather was buried, in the chantry in Compton Pauncefoote Church.

    Family Thomasine BAMPFIELD,   b. Est 1432,   d. Bef 1485  (Age ~ 52 years)
    Married
    • The Bampfield pedigree in Vivian shows that the vis of 1564 showed that Thomasine Bampfield had been married to one Walter Pauncefoote. No other information was given.
It seems almost certain it was this Walter since:
      1. The surname Pauncefoot is a rare one.
      2. This family are about the same social standing as the Bampfields.
      3. This Walter seems to have had a sister Margaret who married Thomasine's brother, William.
      4. A Peter Bampfield, possibly the brother of Thomasine and William of that name, was clearly a friend of Walter's, so it is likely the families knew each other.
      5. A Chancery Court case concerning a marriage settlement concerns a Walter son of Walter and Thomasin daughter of John, and so fits with both of these families. It names property that from Pauncefoote IPMs clearly associates it with this particular Pauncefoote family.
      6. Although this Walter had a son Walter and, judging by the Pauncefoote vis, a father also called Walter, it is clear that the son died married to an Isabel, considering his young age probably his only wife. Walter the father is shown in the vis as having a wife who was a Davers or Davies.
The estimated ages of Thomasine's siblings suggest she was an age to make marriage to this Sir Walter the most likely.
      7. It is most likely a Bampfield from Poltimore would marry someone from Compton Pauncefoote than from Gloucestershire, where most other Pauncefootes seem to have been living at this time, with others more distant.
