Alexander Horton, of full age, Widower, Farmer, resident Cornwood, father Philip M. Horton, Farmer to Grace Corber, of full age, Spinster, no occupation given, resident Cornwood, father Benjamin Corber, Farmer.
Married by Licence, by W F Sanders, Rector of Harford; Alexander and Grace both signed, witnesses William Barons and Suhe(?) Corber (also both signed)
There were also marriages of an Alexander Horton of Cornwood in Ermington (1817 to Jenny HOOKE) and Plympton St Mary (1818 to Mary Ann HEAD); all three Alexanders can be found in the 1851 census from which it is clear than it was this Alexander who remarried to Grace. (In 1851 census there is a - Cornwood-born Alexander in London, wife Mary Ann, aged 56 - ties in with the Plympton marriage, and another still in Cornwood, Alexander aged 63 with wife Jane; seems like the one who married in Ermington).
Alexander's 2nd marriage was to the 2nd cousin of his 1st wife. The first child was baptised 5½ months after the marriage (although not an indecent time after Frances' death - the marriage was over 2 years later). Maybe she had moved in as housekeeper to look after the motherless children of Alexander's 1st marriage after he was widowed, or even earlier to help with them and nurse her cousin before her death; the youngest child was only 3 months old when Frances died. This relationship meant that Northmore was not only his first wife's maiden name, but also that of his 2nd wife's mother. This may be why it was given as a middle name to a child by his 2nd wife.
