    • Will: 1730

    Notes:

    Birth:
No baptism found. However, his marriage close to Stokenham and his subsequent life in Great Torrington point to him being almost certainly the son of the Rev. Peter and Katherine Glubb - Stokenham being where the Rev. Peter was Vicar, and Great Torrington where Katherine was from and returned with her children after her husband's death. (There appear to be no other Glubb connections with Great Torrington or nearby).

Blackawton is not near Great Torrington but is near Stokenham where Peter's father was Rector; perhaps the two families got to know each other at that time.

  1. 32.  The Rev. Peter GLUBB, [Father uncertain] was born est 1633; was christened in 1632 in St. Eustachius’ Church, Tavistock, Devon, England (son of Richard GLUBB and [ - ? - ]); died after 17 Jun 1659; was buried on 30 Mar 1674 in St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England.

    Other Events:

    • Education: From 1638 to 1651, Tavistock, Devon, England; Schooling
    • Education: From 14 Nov 1651 to 4 Feb 1653/54, Wadham College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England; University
    • Occupation: 1661, Huntshaw, Devon, England; Rector
    • Occupation: 2 Feb 1664/65, Stokenham, Devon, England; Vicar and Perpetual Vicar
    • Grant of Administration: 30 May 1674

    Notes:

Mentioned in his grandfather Peter Glubb's will (written 1654) and also that of his father (written 1659)

    Birth:
Richard definitely had a son Peter, but it is  possible I have merged two different Peters here.

I estimate Peter the clergyman was born about 1633 from date of matriculation at Oxford.

I think it safe to assume that Peter the clergyman was one of the three baptised in Tavistock around 1630: in 1628 (son of Charles), 1630 (son of Nicholas - page on this website here) or 1632 (son of Richard - as I have now linked here).
Perhaps Richard's son is the one whose age is most typical of age at matriculation, but given that he was a 'pleb' and may not have had the same education opportunities as some others I think it was probably possible it was any of the above three.
Given a son, quite likely his eldest, seems to have been given the name Richard it does seem he was most likely the son of Richard. The likely dob from his matriculation also fits this Peter best.

Glubb is a rare surname, and whilst there could have been other Peter Glubbs in Parishes whose records aren't indexed online it seems unlikely. Tavistock in any case seems to have had a large proportion of them.
There was a Richard Glubb of Barnstaple for whom admon was granted in 1669, the only example of a Glubb in North Devon I am aware of before Peter went to Huntshaw. Was Peter his son? Peter was quite an unusual Christian name at the time, so it would be a bit of a co-incidence unless Barnstaple Richard was related to the Tavistock Glubbs - as seems quite likely. Most of the non-Tavistock Glubbs I am aware of at this or an earlier period were west of the Tamar.

It is unfortunate that Alumni Oxonienses 1500-1714 which shows a father's name and place of residence for so many (for instance Luke, this Peter's grandson, is shown as 's. Ric., of Torrington')  does not have this information for Peter.

    Education:
Estimated dates. Assuming I am right ** (which I may not be) ** that Peter was from Tavistock it will be interesting to find out more about the education available to the sons of the town's traders at the time, especially given that a century earlier their schooling would have been lost with the dissolution of the monastries and all that they provided for the local populace.

    Education:
    Alumni Oxonienses entry:
"pleb. Corpus Christi Coll., matric. 14 Nov., 1651, B.A. 4 Feb., 1653-4; of Wadham Coll. Feb. to Oct., 1650, rector of Hunshaw, Devon, 1661, vicar of Stokenham 1665. See Foster's Index Eccl."

    Occupation:
From his entry in Alumni Oxoniensis

    Occupation:
Peter was appointed Vicar and instituted as Perpetual Vicar on 2 Feb 1665 (data on CCEd), following the resignation of the former Vicar.
See entries from this CCEd website page.

An entry in a Stokenham register listing the vicars shows his induction as Feb: 7th 1664 - presuambly OS so 1664/5. Since it appears to have been written with later entries, including Peter's burial as 'was buried April 30 Mar 30 - 1674'(!) not too much faith can be put in the precise date. (A later copy preserved the same anomaly)

    Grant of Administration:
"Admin. of goods of Peter Glubb, cleric, vicar of Stokenham, May 1674.
Bond of Katherine Glubb of Stokenham, wid. and John Somaster of Stokenham, gent. in £200, 15 May 1674.

Commisison to Frederick Marker, cleric vicar of Stokenham and Richard Garland of Charleton, cleric to take the oath of Katherine Glubb, 15 May 1674.
Administered 19 May 1674 by Richard Garland.
Administration granted 30 May 1674 to Katherine the relict.

Inventory of goods of Mr. Peter Gloub late vicar of Stokenham by Mr. John Sommaster and Richard Head 13 May 1674.

    Wearing apparell £15

    four feather beds performed £20
    Table linen £10
    Plate £15

    Sum £110 0s 10d.

Exhibd. 29 May 1674 by Katherine Glubb relict and admr."
(in the Principal Registry, Exeter - transcribed by Miss Olive Moger)

    Died:
Peter, son of Richard, Was alive when his father wrote his will in

The evidence of a vacancy due to natural death in the register at the DHC, Chanter 25 is dated 8 Apr 1674 - after the date of burial, so perhaps when the diocese authorities learnt of the death, clearly not when it happened.
