Indenture showing a poor child, Martha Cleave Coaker was placed with George as a parish apprentice
The indenture shows she was to learn housewifery; I can't help thinking it would actually have been Elizabeth who would have had the burden of teaching but also the benefit of help from Martha, and the responsibility of caring for her. George and Elizabeth had only married two years before but already had two young sons. One of the churchwardens at the time, named as responsible with the overseers for the placement of the child, was John Hannaford - perhaps this was Elizabeth's father or other relation, seeing that she could do with help in caring for her young and growing family. The indenture doesn't show Martha's age, but the Parish Register shows she was baptised in October 1773 so must have been approaching 9 when she was placed with George and his family.
