Mary WATERMAN, bur. 22 May 1767, St. Mary’s Church, Lenham, Kent, England (Mother)Notes - (Research):The fact that Wm had a son and grandson called Basil suggests he is a descendant of Richard and Isabella - but how?
Neither Wm nor Jane were buried at All Saints Maidstone; could do with finding their burials to get age at dth and hence yr of birth.
William can have been born no later than about 1769, more likely a few years before this.
If descended from Richard and Isabella he would have to be a son or grandson. Not only has a burial been found to fit their son William in 1771, but Richard's will implies that William predeceased him.
A grandson would have to be the son of Basil, Richard or John, or just possibly William.
Basil's will makes no mention of a son William, implying that he either didn't have one or that he was dead by 1795 when Basil wrote his will? William could have predeceased his father, Basil, who died in 1801, but not by 1795 - his last known child was baptised 1799.
Both Richard and John did have sons called William but I seem to have found their families - and they don't match with this William. Could either of them be wrong? In the case of Richard's son William this seems very unlikely due to the use of the name Springfield.
A possibility to explore in the case of John's son William.
Another possibility, mentioned above, is that this Wm was the son of Richard and Isabella's son Wm. Wm senior was aged about 27 when he died in 1771, so old he enough that he could have married and had a son by 1769. It is noticeable that the will of Richard, father of Wm senior, makes no mention of his son Wm. He leaves his property to be shared between all his children then living, "and to their heirs ...". One might have expected Wm's share to have gone to his child or children if he had had any. But maybe he was really only thinking of his living children, and the heirs bit was just standard wording added by the solicitor drawing up the will?
