Name John MARDON Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Gender Male Occupation 1831 Stoke Fleming, Devon, England Hellier - John was described as a hellier when his son was baptised. This was a tiler or slater. It is an old term - the earliest reference in the OED (online) is 1467, but it seems it may have died out in most of the country by the C19th, for in 1844 Bray wrote regarding Devon: "Slaters with us still retain that antique name by which..they are distinguished by Chaucer; for here they are called helliers."
