Samuel DE FARVAQUES
Set As Default Person -
Name Samuel DE FARVAQUES Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1581 Leyden, Netherlands
- Date estimated from date of marriage; place from marriage record
Gender Male Miscellaneous 27 Sep 1627 [1] Helped draw up marriage contract for Anthoine Rollé - Samuel was described as the master of Anthoine when he helped draw up the contract for his marriage to Marie Visme.
Godparent 15 Jan 1634/35 Walloon Church, Canterbury, Kent, England
To Samuel son of Jean Dartois - From transcriptions by Hovenden
"[1634/5] Jan. 15 Samuel, fils de Jean DARTOIS. Tem. Samuel Vincent, representée par Philippe Bert; Samuel de Faruaques, Elizabeth Pinçon, representée par Marie Renart, et Elleuin ..."
Died 25 Aug 1637 Canterbury, Kent, England
[2] Probate Inventory 10 Nov 1637 Taken - Made by Samuel's brother Nicholas and one Michel House.
Exhibited in Court on 10 January 1638.
Surprisingly for an inventory which had to be exhbited in a court of the Church of England, this was recorded in French. Whether there was an allowance made for a few years for the protestant refugees or whether there was never any restriction on the language that could be used I don't know.
Occupation Canterbury, Kent, England
Silk weaver - I am guessing Samuel was a silk weaver from the entry in his inventory 'soye et remennants de soye et en outils' - 'silk and remnants of silk and tools'
Siblings2 brothers and 1 sister
Half-siblings1 half sister (family of Francois GODEFROY and Francoyse BAQUELÉ) Notes - Despite the discrepancy over the father's name, I think there was most likely only one Samuel. For the moment at least I am showing Samuel, husband of Judith (son of Jan) and Samuel, brother of Paul and Nicholas (and so son of Gilles) as one person.*
The marriage contract for Judith, daughter of Samuel, shows her uncles as Paul and Nicholas de Farvaques; this seems to confirm that there was just the one Samuel. as Judith was a child of Samuel's marriage to Judith. As Judith's marriage was in 1633 even if Samuel and Rose had also had a daughter Judith, missing from my tree, then she could not have been old enough to marry by this time.
(* - One possibility is that Francoyse married two de Farvaques, and that the 'brothers' were half-brothers, but an error in recording the name of Samuel's father seems more likely)

Family 2 Rose, b. Est 1595, d. Aft 1646 (Age ~ 52 years) Married Abt 1624 - If I am right, that Samuel married Judith and then after Judith died, in Dec 1623, Samuel married Rose, then given that the 1st child of Samuel and Rose was baptised in April 1625, the marriage was more-or-less certainly in 1624.
A son died in 1636 but I don't know which one:
"Août 21 Le fils de Samuel FARUAQUES." [5]

It is noticeable there are far more deaths than normal at this time; in 1637 plague was widely distributed in England that year, and maybe Canterbury was one of the places it was severe. - [S44] Walloon Church, Canterbury, Kent - Parish Registers - Hovenden, Robert Hovenden F.S.A., editor, (Lymington, Hampshire: Huguenot Society of London, 1891-1898.), 463.
