    Notes
    • (Research):Buckfastleigh Baptisms (on the SOG website) show a Catherine Fogwell, dau William and Catherine baptised on 1 May 1748.

      Two dates so close together are unlikely. Various possible explanations:
      there could have been 2 families with similar name;
      1. A date may be wrong;
      2. A baby may have been "baptised twice" (OK, theologically impossible, but parents occasionally requested it and a clergyman, not knowing of the earlier baptism, may have agreed.
      3. Or maybe this was a private baptism and being received into church - I've only encountered this in the same parish, but I guess if parents moved the 2 events could occur in different places.
      4. Or was the second date the date of burial?

    Family John FRENCH,   d. Yes, date unknown

    • From PR (DFHS transcription, not seen PR image)
      'John French' married 'Catherine Vogwell'

      Great care needs to be taken if looking for the children of John and Catherine; French was a common name in Widecombe e.g. as well as their son WIlliam bapt at the end of 1779 two more Williams were baptised in 1780 who could therefore appear the same age in records.
