(I did think Amess, Mary's surname when she married Zachariah, might have been her surname from a previous marriage. However, there was no marriage of a Mary Elizabeth to an Amess or even an Am*s anywhere in Kent in the appropriate time period, judging by the index on FreeBMD, but there was a birth which fits perfectly the age and birthplace of Mary as recorded in the 1901 census)
