    • Children all baptised at Stokenham; he was given the title of "Mr" when James was bapt in 1766.
      Having a respected position in the community did not save his family from tragedy, which seems to have struck less than 2 years after this.
      In the space of a month, from 17th March to 17th April two Simons (I guess this one and his son, though it's possible it was this one and his father), Elizabeth his daughter and a Mary (wife or daughter?) were buried.
      Often groupings of family deaths like this can be easily recognised as due to a disease which was rampant at the time, but there were only 6 other burials in Charleton in 1766, the same as the total for 1765, far less than the number in 1767. So what was the cause? Maybe a tragic accident, perhaps a fire, with the victims gradually dying from their injuries. Unfortunately no note was added in the burial register to explain these deaths.
