Husbandman - Marr licence for his daughter, Mary, in 1644 shows he was then of Herne Parish (still a husbandman)
I suspect his father-in-law may have been a farmer and Richard may have taken over the farm, his father-in-law probably having died two years before he married, and being of Chislet.
Died Aft 1644 - Marriage licence for his son George (1641) shows that Richard consented, as did that for his daughter Mary in 1644.

Feb 1595/96, Chartham, Kent, England (Age ~ 56 years) (Mother) Notes - In the will of this Richard's father, also Richard, he leaves bequests to his 4 "sonnes", John, John, Nicholas and Richard, so there must have been another Richard besides the one who died in infancy.
John of Burmarsh had a brother Richard alive when he wrote his will in 1622, as well as a sister Susan, consistent with this family, and suggesting this Richard was still alive in 1622.
If it was this Richard and not his nephew who had a family in Chislet / Herne then he must have died after 1644.
Children are commonly named in order of birth in wills, so it seems likely that this Richard was younger than his brothers.
I think this Richard was most likely "Richard of Chislet", rather than the nephew of this Richard, son of one of his brothers John (who I previously showed as Richard of Chislet). - (Research):Richard is described as "of Chislet" on his marriage licence in 1613, when he leased land at Chartham from the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral in 1614, and at the time his son John was baptised (1615) and a Chrisomer buried (1617); also, his daughter Alice was recorded as being born in Chislet when she was baptised in Herne in 1619. Thereafter the baptism entries for his children make no mention of Chislet (1622 - 1633) so the family may have moved into Herne parish between 1619 and 1622.
Part of Chislet parish was detached from the main part, and nearer to Herne; they may have lived in this part and it maybe why the baptisms were in Herne Church rather than that in Chislet.
At first it seemed obvious that this must be the Richard, the one mentioned in the will of John Goatham who died in Herne in 1611. His inheritance may have enabled him to marry once he was twentyone; he married in 1613 and as a newly wed what more natural than that he should want to set himself up to support his family, hence the lease of the land in Chartham.
Chartham is about 10 miles from Chislet - not the most obvious choice for a husbandman to keep an eye on his land, but presumably he was more an overseer than doing the day-to-day work. That said a commute by horseback of 10 miles would presumably be easily achievable.
He may have chosen for his family to live on the healthier land on a hill - although he could have stayed within Mystole for that; while some of Chartham parish is around the Stour, it rises onto Chartham Downs.
Chislet is mostly a marshy area but some, in particular the part near Herne, separate from the main part, appears to be more hilly.
Or he may have been in Chislet because he was also farming land there. He appears from his father's will to have been an only son or at least the only one to survive him; if his father John was a husbandman like his grandfather Richard, what more natural than that he should have worked alongside his father, and taken over from his father when the latter died.
But Richard his grandfather died in 1585; this Richard took on the lease of the land in 1614. Was the reference to the work done by a Richard Gotham deceased really a reference to work done thirty plus years before or had the elusive Richard, uncle to this Richard, been the one to erect the barn? Or had an earlier lease in the name of Richard senior passed on to other members of the family but, being in the name of Richard, the work was ascribed to him?
It is possible that the Richard I refer to as elusive is far from elusive. The marriage, children and lease may all be referring to Richard, son of the Richard who died in 1585, and not to the Richard I have them currently attached to, son of John and grandson of the Richard who d. 1585. Most of my comments above apply equally whichever Richard was "of Chislet" - assuming that only one was "of Chislet", i.e. that the wife, family and lease refer to the same person - I think that far more probable than that I have the right Richard.
Since all the Herne and Whitstable Goathams seem to be descended from "Richard of Chislet" I feel confident that I am descended from this Richard, and from the one who died in 1585, I'm just not sure about the John and Katherine in between.

The will of Richard Goatham (d. 1585)
This is the will of Richard's father, in which he was named as a beneficiary.The will of John Goatham (c. 1568 - 1611)
Richard's brother's will - the one of his 2 brothers called John who lived in Herne. John appointed Richard to be overseer.
Since John's children would not inherit until they reached particular given ages, Richard was empowered to take money from the estate should John's widow remarry to ensure that the children's legacies could be paid.The will of John Goatham (c. 1566 - 1622)
The will of one of Richard's brothers' called John - the one who was living in Burmarsh.
Along with two others John appointed Richard to oversee the will, and assist his (John's) oldest daughter as Executrix. He left him 20/- for his "paynes".
Richard was also to have received £5 should John's daughter Margaret have died before reaching the age of 22, but I believe she did reach that age.
