  • Name Katherine BURGES
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born
    • Between 1566 and 1586, assuming no younger than 16 when she married Richard Goatham, no older than 48 when son Edward Hayward was baptised.
Baptised 25 Feb 1572/73  St. Mary’s Church, Chilham, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 2 Oct 2020)
"Catherine daughter of Richard Burges the sonne day."
      Probable baptism of this Katherine.
Chilham is about 11 miles from where her husband John Goatham was living at the time of the marrige, but he was from Chartham, a neighbouring parish to Chilham, and in particular his family farmed at Mystole, close to the Chartham / Chilham parish boundary, while Catherine's father was recorded as living at Broadham when he died, so that was likely where she had grown up. Broadham is close to Mystole on the other side of the parish boundary.
It seems that although apparently marrying a bride from (for those times) some distance away, he may in fact have been marrying 'the girl next door'.
(there was a Katherin Burgis 'of Wy' who married in Wye in 1589, who could have been this Katherin, but she would have been younger than a large majority were at marriage at this time, and in addition a Katheryn Burges had been baptised in Wye in 1564 so the marriage was most likely that Katheryn)

(another Katherine Hayward was buried in Herne in 1640, but the fact that the 1638/39 burial was followed in the register by a Richard Goatham described as 'her son' shows which was this Katherine)

    Notes
    • (Research):(Have seen the will of a Katherine Hayward of Herne written in 1638, proved in 1640; it is clearly, as suspected, that of another Katherine Hayward, presumably the one buried in Herne in 1640).

    Married
    • Ann was Richard's wife at the end of his life, but I've seen no direct evidence that she was the mother of any or all of his chiidren. However, the lack of any burial of any other wife in Chilham or of a remarriage suggests that she was.
