  • Name Margarett PACKINGHAM
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Between 1666 and 1675
    • Date: not likely to have been older than 50 when last child baptised (1716) nor younger than 17 when 1st child baptised.
Place: most likely would seem to be the East Farleigh area (where her husband was from), East Malling (where she married) or Lenham or Otterden (where she subsequently lived).
East Malling - rule out due to James's first marriage being there?

No Margaret Packingham, Packenham or similar found in Kent (index on FMP, viewed 27 Oct 2022). Could she have been a widow? - No marriage of a Margaret to a Packingham or Packenham and variants, or even P*n*m anywhere in Kent, 1680-1690.

"July 31 married James Stubbersfiel & Margarett Packingham"
(Of 33 marriages on the two facing pages on one of which this marriage is recorded not one bride or groom is recorded as a widow or widower, so it seems clear that this was not being recorded in the register at the time. Hence it is possible that Margaret was not born a Packingham.)

James and Margarett are not likely to have married before Margarett was aged 16, which is very unlikely to have been earlier than 1682 (from date their last known child was baptised), and presumably married by time their first known child was baptised in 1692. If daughter Margret was their first child, then they probably married shortly before this.
Hence the East Malling marriage is a "good fit", date-wise at least. It is somewhat further from Otterden or Lenham, where their children were baptized than was usually the case at this time. However, James may have been a farmer, and farmers did often move further than ag labs; presumably if they didn't inherit a farm the chance of one being available very close to home at the right time was slim.
Also in favour of it being the James and Margaret who married in East Malling who then had a family in Otterden, as well as no other marriage being found, the children baptised in Lenham and Otterden were the only children of  a James Stubberfield (or variants) baptised in Kent, 1690-1710.
Possibly the move for James was to the area Margaret was from, maybe she inherited property or it was part of a marriage settlement. (See Margaret's birth notes on some thoughts re her origins).

James and Margaret seem to have moved to Otterden Parish c 1693 and lived there for over 40 years, up to the death  of Margaret in 1737.
Since their daugther Elizabeth married yeoman farmer / sometime Wichling churchwarden Edward Springfield I guess they were of similar standing. They may well have farmed at the farm associated with Stubblefield Farmhouse (also marked on OS maps).
