Notes - At the time of the baptism of 2 of Stephen and Mary's children, Elizabeth and Thomas, it was noted that they were paupers. These 2 baptisms were also private - but I think it was to some extent co-incidental (3 out of 5 baptisms where the parents are noted as paupers on the KFHS transcript for Bishopsbourne was the baptism private). I say "to some extent co-incidental" as I guess the condition of being paupers could increase the chance that the baby looked at risk of not surviving (in this case, one - Elizabeth - did survive, or I wouldn't be here, the other didn't).
The pauper status was not generally recorded in Parish Registers, but was during the period when a tax was charged on entering the details in the register (1783 - 1794) - paupers were exempt. - (Research):Mary, surname given as Lucus, bapt 6 Dec 1789 at St. George's Canterbury - dau of this Stephen and Mary?
No other children in Cant for this couple. If she was a few months old at the time just time for them to have Thomas in Apr 1790, esp if he was premature - looks like he lived only a couple of days, this could have been the cause.
BUT a Stephen Lucas marr Mary Atkins in Cant in 1785, I expect Mary was their dau.

Though the entry generally referred to Stephen Lucas he signed his name as Stephen Lukus!
Mary made her mark, as did her sister Martha as a witness.
The other witness was J. Saffery, who was a witness to most marriages at St. Mary Northgate at this time and so probably no connection to the family.
