William ADAMS
Set As Default Person -
Name William ADAMS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1748 - Estimated from age at marriage
Gender Male Died Aft 1800 - After 1800:
A William Adams senior was a witness to the marriage of a William Adams in Kingston in 1800. I believe the groom to be the son of this William, and hence the William senior is probably this William.
Notes - A Wm of Kingstone had marr banns read in Bishopsbourne in 1799 - a second marr of this Wm, the marr of this Wm's son or unconnected?
Bishopsbourne: to widow Mary Rudington, otp; Wm of Kingston; banns 16-30 June 1799 - I haven't found the marr at Kingston or Bishopsbourne
A Wm also marr Kingstone in 1800 - it seems clear this one's son since there was a witness Wm Adams senior who I think must have been this Wm. - (Research):
Have I the marriage of the right William and Ann?
Marr witnesses
Thomas Cotton - only other marr witnessed by a Thomas Cotton was John Petley of Ashe to Mary Brown, a widow otp (Ickham) in 1766.
Was Thomas a friend or relation - of Wm or Ann?
Thomas Cotton otp = Elizabeth Seythers otp 13 6 1761
children Thomas (1763) and Mary (1765)
Thomas bur 17 9 1786
Elizabeth bur 23 9 1804, age 73 (i.e. b c 1731)
Thomas Cotton otp = Hannah Spain otp 11 11 1786
son Andrew (1789)
Thomas bur 3 7 1816 age 54 - fits son of T and E above
John Denne - John Denn(e) witnessed many marriages - may have been clerk.
Also in Bishopsbourne
Besides those of the children of Wm and Ann, the only Adams baptisms in Bishopsbourne were:
Matthew, son of Richard (1656)
3 children of Ralph and Elizabeth
Margaret (1762), Ralph (1765) and James (1772).
Only burials besides 3 children of Wm and Ann were James and Ralph, both 1773
marr banns: Elizabeth (1777), Ann (1782), Elizabeth (1800 i.e. one I think was dau of this Wm, my direct ancestor)
I think it likely that this wasn't co-incidence, that William and Ralph were probably related. William could have been a son of Ralph from before he moved to Bishopsbourne or a younger brother.
Whilst William is one of the commonest of men's names on my tree*, there are only 5 Ralphs, all born 1849 or later (* at the time of writing - over 7000 people on the tree).
Also in Ickham
I found the marriage in Ickham by looking for marriages on the IGI but looking at other Adams events there:
Marriages
(on KFHS transcript, CD 22)
John Addams 1667
William 1775 (+ banns) - suppose this Wm
William Adams 1819
Abigail Adams 1708/9
Mary Anne 1807 (+ banns)
Elizabeth Adams 1808 (+ banns)
Banns of Emily Jane 1891 - marrs only recorded to 1837
Baptisms
children of John and Elizabeth: Thomas (1684)
a John was ba or bur 1685/6
children of John and Elizabeth: Thomas (1794), James (1796), Ralph (1798), Stephen (1800)
Burials
Few - John (1685/6), Thomas (1687), Mary, wife of Richard (1747), Richard (1758), Ralph (1804)
Use of name Ralph suggests this family was related to Ralph and Elizabeth in Bishopsbourne.
Were John and Wm both sons of Ralph and Eliz who found work in Ickham?
To proceed
Look in the villages around Bishopsbourne.
Look particularly for burials of Wm and Ann, bapt of Wm,
Looking for Ralphs could help.
Look in Kingston as there were a few Adams events there (on IGI) - did Wm and Ann move there?

I have a DNA match with a descendant of daughter of Thomas, brother of my ancestor Elizabeth, my brother has a match with a son of the same Thomas - suggests I probably have the right parents for my ancestor Elizabeth, i.e. a William and Ann ADAMS, althougth it is possible I link to Thomas in a different way.
==============
I can't be sure that the Wm and Ann Adams who had the family at Bishopsbourne were the Wm Adams and Ann Browning who married at Ickham.
HOWEVER, the evidence does point to it being them.
Clearly there were, as expected, a number of couples called William and Ann ADAMS in Kent around this time. Looking at baptisms of children soon after the Ickham marriage recorded with these parents names there were families in Leeds, Bexley, Broomfield, Lydd and, closer to Ickham, Margate and Bishopsbourne. The Leeds, Bexley and Broomfield couples can be easily dismissed, as they were having children before 1775, as well as being an unlikely distance from Ickham. Ickham to Lydd is about 30 miles ... Margate about 14 ... Bishopsbourne 5 miles village to village, but the nearest part of a deatched part of Ickham to the end of Bishopsbourne is less than half a miles. In addition to the distances making Bishopbourne the most likely, a William Adams married Ann from the parishes of Winchelsea and Icklesham in 1774, parishes adjacent to Lydd. In 1776 a William ADAMS married an Ann in St. Laurnce in Thanet, an adjacent parish to Margate - almost certaily the parents of the children baptised in the latter.
There seem to have been no other marriages of a William Adams to an Ann within 20 miles of Bishopsbourne in the 10 years prior to the first Bishopsbourne baptism.

There are 2 queries:
1. was the Ann who my Wm Adams was married to a Browning?
Need to do a more thorough search of Wm Adams marriages to an Ann in the area (I have tried tracing the Browning tree a little in case it yields info. e.g. is there a Browning will referring to Ann by her married name?)
2. Do I have the right parents for Ann Browning?
In Ickham at this date few marriages showed bachelor or spinster etc. One in 1774 did show a bride, who was 'of this parish' as a widow; the only 2 not too distant in time that show a bride as spinster she was from another parish. The lack of any description may suggest she was a spinster.
Both were otp. Witnesses were Thomas Cotton and John Denn. John Denn(e) was a witness to most marriages - probably parish clerk. Who was Thomas Cotton? - is there a clue as to whether I have the right Ann Browning marrying Wm Adams. (see notes attached to Ann Browning for more info about the 2)
There was another Adams - Browning marr: Ann Adams to Edward Browning, banns read in Bishopsbourne, both otp, 1782. Ann Browning had a brother Edward b c 1751 (NS) but there was also an Edward b 1758, both Ickham.
