Edward GOATHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name Edward GOATHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 19 May 1633 St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England
- PRs in Canterbury
Gender Male Tax records 1664 Belting Borough, Upper Halfe Hundred of Bleangate, Lath of St.Augustine, Kent, England
Hearth tax - At the time of the 1664 hearth tax (on Lady Day) Edward was chargable for 5 hearths; of the 24 people in Belting Borough who were chargeable only one other had 5 hearths and none had more so he appears to have been a wealthy man relative to the norm.
Will 1681 Written - In his will, written in 1681, Edward referred to his daughters Elizabeth and Katharine, and his wife Susan. One of the witnesses was a George Goatham - I am guessing that this was the George who was buried in Herne in 1684, and I am also guessing that this was Edward's brother.

"Edward Gotham and Sarah Richardsonne weare married the 22th of Septembar" - under heading '1659'.
It seems probable that the Sarah Richardson who married Edward was a widow since Michael Richardson of Herne died in 1658, three years after he married Edward.

Family 2 Susan, d. 1713
Other Partners: HARRIS m. Bef 1676; George TAYLOR m. Abt Sep 1688Married 24 Sep 1676 St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England
Where was the marriage?
The PRs for Reculver and Herne both record the same marriage on 24 September 1676. I have seen the PR images for both and both appear to be original records, and are in the correct place with respect to other entries. The handwriting is different in the 2 registers, so it was not the same priest taking marriages in both and forgetting where the particular marriage had been.
Although the registers were a priest's responsibility, sometimes the task devolved to the Parish Clerk. I wonder if the Clerk entered the marriage in one register where it did happen and then the priest forgot the venue and entered it into the other? I will see if I can find out if the same priest was looking after both parishes at this time (though even if he wasn't, he might have helped out a neighbour)
The entries are slightly different:
in Reculver - "1676 Edward Gotham of Hoath & Susan Harrison of Hearn married Sept: 24 : 7" (I don't know what the last 7 means - was there a 6 after it i.e. the year repeated? - it is on the page edge so could have been lost in rebinding or just in the photo)
in Herne - "Edward Gotham of Hoath & Susan Harris wid mard. Sep 24"
Marriage entry in Herne register shows Susan as a widow, doesn't mention Edward being a widower.
