Symon SUMPTER, [*? - Link To Parents Uncertain *]

Name Symon SUMPTER Suffix [ONS gp] [*? - Link To Parents Uncertain *] Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1677 Sherford, Devon, England - (assumed from baptism)
Baptised 4 Sep 1677 St. Martin’s Church, Sherford, Devon, England - From BTs (image on FamilySearch, viewed Dec 2016)
Shown as the son of Rich: amd Mary
I am guessing that this baptism was of my Simon Sumpter. Not only was there this baptism in Sherford but also Fry shows that there was a grant of admin for a Simeon Sumpter of Sherford in 1683; I guess the similar name was no coincidence, and that this Symon was a close relation of the one for whom admin was granted.
With BTs only surviving for less than a third of the years for 1608-1712 there could easily have been a cousin Simon of the Simon whose baptism I show here. Though if both had survived into adulthood there should have been some sign of another this one could have died and another survived. However, in the absence of other evidence I am suggesting that this Simon was the son of Richard.
Gender Male Church Office 1712 Sherford, Devon, England Churchwarden - 'Simon Sumper' signed the BTs as churchwarden
Protestation oath 1723 Kingsbridge, Devon, England - "Simon Sumpter of Charleton" signed the oath
Occupation Charleton, Devon, England Yeoman / husbandman - In 1742 Robert Goodyear was apprenticed by Sherford Parish to Simon Sumpter of Charleton, yeoman
Died Abt Jul 1752 Charleton, Devon, England - (assumed from burial)
Buried 7 Jul 1752 St. Mary’s Church, Charleton, Devon, England [1]
- Another Simon Sumpter was buried in 1768, but as 'Simon Sumpter of Stokenham', I believe the son of this Simon, was alive to be party to his sister Mary's marriage settlement in 1761 and his last son was baptised in 1766 it would be appear to be that Simon buried in 1768 and this one in 1752
Siblings
2 brothers and 1 sister Patriarch & Matriarch Nicholas SUMPTER, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandfather)
Mary HAWKINS, d. Yes, date unknown (Mother)Notes - (Research):Looking in the Charleton PRs, before 1715 there is a dearth of Sumpter records, suggesting Simon moved from elsewhere. But where?
Some miscellaneous Sumpter references
These give clues to researching the Sumpter's further; I guess that Simon moved to Charleton from Sherford.
25 3 1742: Robert Goodyear was apprenticed to Simon Sumpter to be instructed in husbandry (amongst appreticeships etc for Sherford in the Devon RO) (Simon Sumpters born/bapt Totnes 1651/3(IGI) - sons of Richard - connection?)
There were Sumpter / Sunt(e/o)rs in Dodbrooke in the C18th
The tithes in Sherford in 1613 include a Nicoll Sumpter (widow) and a Rycherd Sumpter. in 1678,
The Sherford Parish Return towards the rebuilding of St. Paul's Cathedral includes contributions from a Richard 'Sumpster' (of 2/-) and a Richard Sumpter (6d).
A Nicholas Sumpter was buried in Sherford in 1714 - maybe Simon's father, and hence his naming his 1st son Nicholas. although as his father-in-law was Nicholas he could have been named after him. Other Sherford burs were Mary 1715 and Constant 1728.
A Cicily Sumpter was buried in Kingsbridge in 1637 - does this suggest the name Cicily / Cecilia was also in the Sumpter family? Simon and his wife Cecilia Blank seem to have been some sort of cousins - Cecilia Blank's grandmother was one Joane Sumpter
A Wm and Sarah had children bapt Chivelstone 1791, 1793, 1811 - same couple? 91 and 93 births could be children of the Wm and Sarah who had children in Stokenham.
