Two hundred pounds was a huge sum of money in those days - could he really have afforded such a fine?

Notes - In his will he names a number of relations including his "brother John Curling". My first thought was that it was probably a half-brother, though I then wondered if he was a brother-in-law. Neither of his wives had the surname Curling when he married them, but either or both could have been a widow when Edward married them. But I have now found a marriage consistent with being his mother's 1st marriage, including a son John born to the marriage - hence I think my first theory was right, and that John Curling was a half brother.
In 25 Oct 1719 (born 16 Oct) a Mary Goatham was bapt at St Mary le Strand, dau of an Edward and Hannah Goatham. This Edward? Another related (haven't found any who could have been fathers at this time)? Or a Gotham from Devon?

"Edw Goattam & Susanna Curling married the 4 June"
Whilst there is no indication of marital status, the entry immediately before shows "Daniel Stephens & Wid. Mary Cocke ..." (my emphasis) which may suggest Susanna was a spinster, although her son Edward's reference to "my brother John Curling" and a family to fit with John being her son suggests she wasn't.
Offspring Son Robert? - In 1731 there was a Chancery Court case in which one of a number of plaintiffs was Robert Goatham, a butcher of St Giles in the Fields [London].
I'm not certain who this Robert was, but it seems quite likely he was a son of Edward and Susanna.
1. This family had links to London - their son John and daughter Mary both married there.
2. There is a gap between known children, with baptisms every other year 1689 to 1693, then none until 1702. It seems likely they did have more children born during this gap.
3. Son John named a son Robert. John was into using family names '96 his first son was named Edward, his father's name, also that of a brother, then he had one named John, presumably after himself. But why did he use the name Robert? I have no close relation Robert in his or his wife's family. Could it be because there was a missing brother Robert?
