Thomas LIGHT
Set As Default Person -
Name Thomas LIGHT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1804 Modbury, Devon, England
Gender Male Apprenticeship Est 1813 Wolborough, Devon, England
To William Crews - Where parents paid to place a child as an apprentice that child usually became an apprentice at the age of 14. Where the overseers of the poor placed a child or children from a poor family this usually happened at an earlier age, at one time from as young as 7 though the minimum age was later raised to 9. I suspect Thomas was a pauper apprentice, quite likely placed at the age of 9.
Apprenticeship to 1825 Beaford, Devon, England
to Robert Burd - From some reason Thomas was moved from one master to another during his time as an apprentice; possibly his first master died.
He was probably an apprentice until he was 21.
Poor Law 1830 Kingsteignton, Devon, England
Settlement Examination - "Thomas Light, 25, labourer born in Modbury but his parents settlement was Wolborough, he was apprentice to William Crews of Wolborough, he was assigned to Robert Burd of Beaford where he served out his appreticeship before moving to Kingsteignton."

Family Elizabeth BAILEY, b. 1806, Kingsteignton, Devon, England
, d. Sep Q 1856, Newton Abbot Reg Dist, Devon, England
(Age 50 years) Marriage License 30 Sep 1830 - Licence for marriage in Kingsteignton
Married 9 Oct 1831 St. Michael’s Church, Kingsteignton, Devon, England
- Thomas seems to have been reluctant to marry Elizabeth. He was believed to be the father of her son Henry, yet he didn't marry her before or soon after the birth. In September 1830 he obtained a marriage licence, but in 1831 there was a complaint about his refusal to pay for Henry's mainteance, and it was not until October that year that they married.
Maybe he and Elizabeth had been courting but he did not believe Henry wast his son, hence the reluctance.
