Caught escaping prisoner - "ROW-AWAY PRISONER ENDS UP IN THE MUD
THE escaping prisoner rowed hard across the fog-shrouded water . . . heading, he thought, for freedom. But the only place he reached was a mud-trap.
The escaper, 23-year-old John Evans, was on the run from an open prison at Eastchurch. on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. He started rowing early yesterday across the River Swale.
Then, blinded by the fog, he struck mud. The boat would not move. Evans did not dare to try walking, in case the mud swallowed him.
The runaway started shouting for help.
Ashore on the island at Queenborough, the shouts were heard by two men at a glass factory - production manager Charles Goatham, 49, and machine operator Les Pattison.
Torch
The two men went. to the river wall. They shouted. They shone a torch.
And the marooned escaper, guided by the torch, walked through the mud to safety.
Mr. Goatham said later " The man said he had tried to get ashore, but was frightened of sinking in the mud."
He added: "He looked very dejected and wet, _and agreed to come to the factory. Then the police were called."
Evans, of Feltham, Middlesex, was taken back to the jail, where he is serving six months for failing to maintain his family."

Notes - In 1955 Charles arrived back in England on a ship from India, but on a ship from Sydney. Like most of the passengers, his country of "last permanent residence" (i.e. more than 12 months) was shown as India, but his country of "intended future permanent residence" was shown as England. Marital status at this time shown as "married", but there was no wife (or family) with him - travelled ahead, to follow or separated?
- (Research):In birth index mother's maiden name recorded as Powell but I suspect it should be Fowell.
