    • "A man may not marry ... his wife's daughter". So says the table of kindred and affinity (in the back of the Book of Common Prayer), showing who may not be married to whom. George and Eliza did not let this get in the way, and married within a few months of George's wife / Eliza's mother dying.

GRO ref: Hyde, George to Windsor, Eliza q4 1863 Birmingham RD 6d 30

After marriage George and Eliza had a few children together. Had they already done so before marrying? I think probably. Five children appear in the censuses shown as children of George, born during the time when George was married to Margaret, but when she was probably too old to bear children. There may have been others who would have been thus shown in censuses, but who did not live long enough to appear in one. In any case, the births of at least 4 of the 5 who are named there were registered with the surname of WINDSOR and no mother's maiden name given, suggesting they were illegitimate.  Purchasing a copy of the GRO register entry for one in the middle, Clara, born 1856, names her mother, as I suspected it would, as Eliza. I hoped the informant would be shown as George Hyde or his then wife Margaret, so it would be clear whether Eliza was living with her mother and step-father, as she had been at the time of the censuses both before and after this date, but unfortunately it was Eliza herself.
