GRO ref: LUCKHURST, John q2 1846 West Ashford RD 5 20; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as WELLS There were several John Luckhursts born in the area of an age they could have been the father of John William GOATHAM. However, the place of abode and occupation of this John Luckhurst in the 1891 census match that of the one who was charge with the maintenance of Ellen Goatham's illegitimate child, and the census entry also shows he was one born in Charing in about 1846.
However, to further complicate matters there were two John Luckhursts baptised in Charing in 1846, both with the abode also shown as Charing in the baptism register. One, son of Richard and Frances, was baptised on 1 Jan, the other, son of John and Mary, was baptised on 12 July.
Three things indicate that John the father of JWG was the son of John and Mary:
1. The date of baptism: there was both the birth and death of a John Luckhurst registered in q1 1846 in West Ashford RD, the GRO online index showing the death to be of a 0 year old. This would most likely be the son of Richard and Frances, given their son was baptised 1 Jan.
There was also a birth (but no death) registered in q2 1846 of a John Luckhurst.
2. Looking for census entries for 1851 and 1861 for a John born in Charing in 1846 only brings up entries for one John and he was with parents John and Mary.
3. Looking for Richard and Frances in Charing in the 1851 census confirms they did not have a son John with them. In 1861 the same family except that Richard was absent and Frances recorded as a widow also has no son John present.
