Mary Ann BAKER
Set As Default Person -
Name Mary Ann BAKER Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 17 Dec 1862 Herne Bay, Kent, England
- From the 1901 census where shown as aged 37
GRO ref: BAKER, Mary Ann q1 1863 Blean RD 2a 637; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Cole
Actual date from 1939 register, except that gives the year as 1864. Her birth registration shows that if, as it probably was, it was on 17 Dec it must have been 2 years earlier. She may well have adjusted her age to seem younger than her husband.
Baptised 1 Mar 1863 Christ Church, Herne Bay, Kent, England

Shown as Mary Ann BAKER, daughter of William and Diana
Gender Female Residence 1871 Greenwich, Kent, England
- Mary's mother have died in 1870, she was living with her oldest sibling and his wife, a couple old enough to have been her parents. Whether she had lived with them from her mother's death as her father found her too young to cope with, or even before if her mother was too ill to care for her before her death, I don't know. Nor do I know if she remained with them until going out to work.
Occupation 1881 Montague House, Oxenden Street, Herne Bay, Kent, England
General Domestic Servant - Working for teacher in a private school, Sabrina Mosley and her household.
Mary Ann had returned to her birth place for work - I don't know for certain how this had come about, her father and several other siblings had moved from Herne Bay by 1871, but it seems her brother John had settled there, probably through leaving home and marrying when the family were there.
(I think it safe to assume it was this Mary Ann who was working there as there does not seem to have been another Mary Ann BAKER of about her age born there, and if her husband's claim to have also been born in Herne Bay is true it would explain how they met; otherwise it seems a surprising co-incidence if she had remained in London).
Occupation 1911 Charwoman Died Dec Q 1945 Bridge Reg Dist, Kent, England
- Probably this death:
GRO ref: Walker, Mary A q4 1945 aged 82 Bridge RD 2a 1537; GRO online index shows middle name as Ann
(Still living in 1939, when recorded as living with her daughter Violet in Herne Bay. In 1941 Herne Bay was moved from Blean RD to Bridge RD, which would explain why the death was in Bridge RD).
