Name John TREVILIAN Suffix [ONS gp] Esq. Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1489 Gender Male Residence 1545 Yarnscombe, Devon, England
When he wrote his will - Since the Trevilian family had inherited Nettlecombe following the marriage of Elizabeth Whalesbury to John in 1452, they being the grandparents of this John, it may seem surprising that John's will shows him as 'of Yarnescombe'. However, John acquired a manor at Yarnscombe due to his marriage to Avice, daughter and hier of Nicholas Cockworthy. A document dated 1532 shows that this John had let his house and park at Nettlecombe to John Sydenham. (see the Trevelyan Papers)

Family Avice COCKWORTHIE, [Mother?], b. Abt 1485, d. Aft 1551 (Age ~ 67 years) Married Bef 1500 - Before a Chancery case dated between 1498 and 1500.
The Devon Vis, as shown by Vivian, indicates that John and Avice had a second son, Thomas, who lived at Yarnscombe.
However, no son Thomas is mentioned in his will or (so far as I can work out) in his IPM (so far I have only seen one version of the Dorset one, and the omission may be because lands had already been granted to him, as often happened as part of a marriage settlement - but even so I would have expected the lands to descend to Thomas before to his uncle or great uncles or their descendants, should his brother John have died was childless). This is what his John's father's will seems to expect - it only specifies that property should descend to his son Thomas or his brothers if there was no issue of his son John. Thomas left a large family when he died in 1565, so I don't believe he could have been a grandson of John *and Avice) but I wonder if he was John's brother.
Seeing the various IPMs may sort this out (none of the 1563 and 1577 IPMs seem to be transcribed in the Trevelyan Papers).
