Notes - (Research):Elizabeth Hannaford was a common name in Widecombe and nearby.
An Elizabeth married in Widecombe in 1770 and unless the marriage was of a widow it would seem to be one of the two Elizabeth's baptised in 1748/9. The other of these Elizabeths was the daughter of Henry and Mary, and likely the first cousin of Elizabeth, daughter of John and Rebecca. Although Henry probably grew up in Hexworthy, the rest of his and Mary's children were baptised in Holne, the last showing they were then living in Buckfastleigh parish. It is therefore at first seemed likely that their daughter was the one who married Edward Stranger due to the Holne link, Edward himself being 'of Holne' (at the time of his marriage, and he had been baptised there in 1745). However, as Edward and Elizabeth named their children John and Rebecca (matching the names of the parents of one of the Widecombe Elizabeths, and not the names of Edward's parents), and given the rarity of the Christian name Rebecca, I think that provides fairly strong evidence in favour of concluding that it was the daughter of John and Rebecca who married Edward Stranger.
I added this Elizabeth and her ancestors as at the time I believed she was most likely to be the one who married George Vogwell, George and his Elizabeth being direct ancestors of mine. However, the above now shows it to be very unlikely. Having done some research I am for the moment leaving this family on my website, though not now linked to my tree.
