  • Name Thomasin CLEAVE
    Suffix [ONS gp] [Uncertain]
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Abt 1703
    • No records of baptisms in Widecomb between Feb 1702/03 and Nov 1704 survive; it seems likely that Joseph and Thomazin would have had a child at this time, given the smaller gaps between their other children than between Joseph and Samuel.
The Thomazin who was buried in 1726 may well have been their daughter. Alternatively, the Thomasin buried in 1703 could have been their daughter and the one buried in 1726 the daughter of Joseph's father Thomas, or of Thomas's brother Andrew.

    Notes
    • (Research):All that is certain about Thomasin's existence is that a person, recorded as Thomasin Cleave, was buried in 1726. There is no indication in the burial register that she was 'wife of ...' or a 'widow', both recorded against a few of the other women buried in Widecomb in 1726 or 1727. However, it is hard to believe that of the 15 females buried in those 2 years only 3 were or had been married. Two of the others were recorded as a 'child', and if it is also assumed that that means the others weren't then we have 10 unmarried adult women. It seems more realistic to suppose that the recording of this additional information was inconsistent.
In this case Thomasin might have been a child, a wife, a widow or a spinster when she died. There is no baptism of a Thomasin Cleave or Hammett that could be her, nor the marriage of     a Thomasin to a Cleave or Hammett, in Widecomb or within 10 miles (as defined by FMP, and from the parishes with records there - including those from FamilySearch). Searched with first name as T*m*in* as at the time of searching FMP does not cope well with the Tamzin / Thomasine variations as being one name).
The Thomas Cleave or Hammett I show as grandfather of this Thomasin had a mother Tamsin. I suspect a Thomasin buried in 1704 was the daughter of one of them, born in a gap in the surviving baptism record 1679-1681; it may be that they both had daughters Thomasin and this burial is that of the other.
However, it seems most likely Thomasin was the daughter of Joseph and his wife Thomasin; they named their first son after his father, Joseph, so it seems quite likely they would name their first daughter after her mother.
