  • Name Charity TOR
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Baptised 28 Dec 1598  St. Pancras’ Church, Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Gender Female
    Died
    • I did think that as her father in his will left bequests to 6 children of William French that this might mean that Charity had, by then, died. However, looking at the baptisms I think this is unlikely - see notes under William and Charity's marriage.
    Buried
    • ** Possibly ** the 'Chrity Frinch' buried on 21 Jan 1674 in Widecombe - but there was a Charity French baptised in Widecombe 1669/70, with no obvious marriage or burial for her, so it could have been her burial. Given the BT entry gives the name as Christian French I think it more likely (though far from certain) that it was the younger Charity; her mother was called Christian and so the scribe may have been thinking of her.
PR entry (from image on FMP, viewed 16 Jul 2021)
"Chrity frinch was buried the xxith February"
(January was first written and then this crossed out and February inserted, although the following entry is for a burial 2 weeks earlier, if February is correct)
BT entry (from image on FMP, viewed 22 Jul 2021)
"Christian French was buried the 20th of Desember"
(was it Dec, Jan or Feb? if December it was entered after a later burial)

    • From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 16 Jul 2021)
"Wyllyam Torr & Marye hext the xviith of nove[m]ber"There is no obvious reason for the gap between children's baptisms of 1606 and 1613; the lack of baptisms after could simply be Mary's age but would be expected anyway as there are no records surviving of baptisms after 1613 until 1624.
The brief abstract of William's will shows he left daughters Dunes and Grace besides those whose baptisms have been found. No other surname is recorded for either, suggesting that they were then unmarried; Grace is probably the 'Grace Tare' who married in 1646, so she may well have been born after 1613.

It looks like the register may be a copy of the older one, and the first two marriages in 1620 were included at the end of one page and the start of the next:
      1st entry -
"William French and Cheritie Tar were married the xviith day of May"
      2nd entry -
"william french and Cherity Tare were maried the xviith day of May"
    Children 8 children
