    • Ellen was a Johnson and a widow when she married Bertie Helps. She was not with her husband in the 1911 census, she and her children were in barracks and a note by her entry shows her husband as Sgt Johnson, aged 30. William's WW1 service papers name his children, thus showing him as Ellen's husband, although he named his wife as Eliza Ann.
      The marriage place is shown as his address, rather than a church or register office! I have not found the marriage of William and Ellen, and am not clear if they were really married (possibly Ellen married William as a widow and hence me not finding it). I don't know if William referred to Ellen as Eliza Ann or if he had left Ellen and was living with another woman as though his wife. The 1911 census entry for Ellen shows her as having completed 2 years of marriage.
