Clearly William must have been born late in 1897, but with 6 weeks allowed for registering a birth it was easy to register a birth in the qtr after a death, when a child did not survive for long.

The 1911 census indicates that Sarah and William had had two children, both of whom had died. Given that by then Sarah was aged 50 I think it safe to assume there were no surviving children of the marriage. However, in both the 1911 and 1921 censuses Sarah's niece Caroline Blanche GOTHAM was living with her and her husband (1911) and her (now a widow, 1921).
