Name Ronald Whiston AVERILL Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 8 Jan 1919 19, London Road, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England
- Date from 1939 register, place from 1921 census
GRO ref: Averill, Ronald W q1 1919 mother's maiden name: Averill, Stoke T. RD 6b 257; GRO online index shows middle name as Whiston and does not show a mother's maiden name suggesting he was illegitimate
Address and birth mother from birth registration (GRO register entry)
This is probably the reason why he was adopted. His middle name Whiston may well be his father's surname.
Gender Male Adopted Bef 1921 - Described as a 'boarder' and a 'nurse child' with unmarried sisters Mary Grace (head of the household) and Sarah Ellen Gotham in the 1921 census, Ronald was still with Mary (Sarah had by then died) in 1939, so clearly he was more than a brief nurse child.
(There was no formal adoption in England until 1926, and Ronald was probably never formally adopted).
