In the 1851 and 1861 censuses John Austen is shown as having a married 'Sister in Law' living with the household.
The most straight forward way she could be his sister-in-law would be either by being the wife of a brother of his or the sister of his wife.
If the former, then her surname would be expected to be Austin, as it wasn't, that suggests the latter - as I am adding her.
However, there are a number of other possibilities: John or his brother could have been born before his parents married and had a different surname; she could have been a 'half sister-in-law', the wife of a half-brother of John's - it is very unlikely the 'half' would be noted. What we call 'step' relations were also referred to as 'in-laws' in the past, so she could be a step-sister of John (or of Julia - the relation to the head of household should then be 'wife's sister-in-law' but the 'wife's' was often omitted).
The main reason for thinking it may well have not been the straightforward link shown here is that John and Julia's son James had (or at least used) the surname 'Duncan' as a middle name. Middle names from surnames are most often (though not always) the name of a biological relation, most often that of ancestors of the receiver.
There is another possibility - that James was John's son by a previous marriage, and that Duncan was her maiden name. That, though, would suggest Jane was John's previous wife's brother's wife - it seems less likely this more distant relation would be living with his family. Although it is natural to assume Jane's surname hints at why James was given the name it could of course be co-incidence. John and his family may have had two links to Duncans; it may have been a common name in the community in which they were living before emigrating to England, and so not as unlikely as it may at first seem.
