Eliza BRADSHAW
Set As Default Person -
Name Eliza BRADSHAW Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1845 - ** Probably NOT the biological child of Mary **
With Mary and her first husband Edward Byatt in 1851, shown as 'nurse child', aged 5. Since the relationship should be shown to the 'head' of the household strictly the census shows Eliza as the nurse child of William Woodrow, but the two entries above clearly give a relationship to William's step-son Edward Byatt, so it would appear the relationship refers to that family. Was she a nurse child of Mary? I think probably, though possibly she was an illegitimate child, 'nurse child' being given to obscure this fact.
However, another Bradshaw nurse child (Caroline) was shown with her mother also in the 1851 census, who had also been with her in 1841 (aged 1), but her mother was too old to be that child's mother. Maybe some family member had died or otherwise become unable to look after their children and Eliza and her mother had taken in one each.
Looking at the Staffordshire baptism index on FMP (as at 11 Oct 2018) there was an Elizabeth [sic] Bradshaw baptised in Fulford in 1845 (illegitimate daughter of Eliza). There was also a Caroline baptised in Sandon in 1839 (illegitimate daughter of Ann). It looks as though Mary and her mother were helping out where the mothers were unable to care for their children, probably due to needing to work as they had no husband.
Gender Female Child Status Nurse child Died Sep Q 1860 Stone Reg Dist, Staffordshire, England
- Eliza was not with Mary at the time of the 1861 census, and I guess the death shown is hers. All the Byatt's born in Stone RD between 1848 and 1862 appear to be children of Mary so it is unlikely the child of another would have been buried there. The fact that she was now recoreded as a Byatt adds weight to the theory she was Mary's daughter, rather than a nurse child.
